Stay focused, be persistent, and never surrender. You can do it. John Shin
Want to know a surefire recipe for success? Be tenacious. Stay focused, be persistent, and never surrender, no matter what happens or how long it takes to succeed.
Be like a dog with a bone.
Tenacity works if your goal is simple or complex, immediate or long-term.
You might want to wake up earlier and spend five minutes stretching your body in the morning instead of hitting the snooze button. Or you might want to retire to Bora Bora.
To reach either goal, shift your focus from the goal to the attitude. Commit to the idea of accomplishing things and focus on the pleasure you’ll feel getting things done, and you WILL see positive results.
This small shift of focus (from the goal to the attitude) has massive potential to change your life. It’s like that “magic” pill everyone is always looking for. So, listen up, and learn how to put it to work for you.
Focus is your best friend.
Our eyes focus and help us see where we are going. Wherever we point our eyes, we can potentially see whatever lies in our path. Potentially. Literally and figuratively.
Have you ever been staring right at something you were looking for, yet didn’t see it sitting in front of you? Have you ever searched in vain for an answer but only later realized it was staring you in the face the whole time? Denial and fear can blind us to reality and make answers seem like golden eggs at an Easter egg hunt.
Focus, then, is more complex than just concentrating.
Clarity (for goals, minds, and souls) requires more than focus itself. Usually, we focus our attention on where we are looking and on what we are viewing. But, we can see things in our imagination or “mind’s eye” too. We can see right through things or not see them at all. Tricky.
Focus feels like it should require intense energy, though it is not difficult or strenuous in and of itself. In fact, the more you relax and focus on the edges, on the attitude, the better your clarity will become. The easier it will be to eliminate distractions, carve out your plan, and get to it.
Ongoing effort, stress, or strain can produce results, but it’s like using a hand plow instead of a tractor. It’s harder and a lot less fun than learning to approach focus with a different mindset. To set focus on fire with the right attitude.
Think of how a magnifying glass can focus the sun’s energy. Though the sun is molten hot, on Earth, it is not hot enough for things to burst into flames without warning. But if you take a magnifying glass and focus the sun’s rays onto paper, twigs, and branches, you can start a fire. The lens focuses the sun’s energy and magnifies its power to the point of ignition. You didn’t have to force it. You just had to utilize the power of focus to transfer one form of energy to another.
According to the wisdom of Google, persistence is “firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition”.
Persistence is all about resolve and staying the course no matter what curve balls life throws at you.
Imagine sailing in a boat through a frightening storm at sea. To reach your destination—the calm, turquoise waters of a tropical paradise—you must stay the course. If you turn back, you may never reach your goal. In fact, you may go backward.
Being persistent doesn’t mean making foolish choices that might put you in harm’s way. Sometimes, it is best to turn around and re-group.
When you make a mistake or have a setback, examine it, learn from it, and then get back on the proverbial horse and ride, keeping the tenacity attitude at the forefront of all you do.
You haven’t failed until you give up trying. You haven’t failed until you decide you have. Until your attitude changes.
In the immortal words of Winston Churchill, facing death and destruction for the people of England during World War II, “We will never surrender”. Given the incredible fear of the unknown in wartime, this powerful mantra united an entire country. They didn’t know how they would prevail or even if they could. They only knew they were determined to protect their ideals and people from harm. Their real power was in their belief.
The power of “never surrender” can help you weather any storm and reach the paradise inherent in your goals.
The surefire recipe for success is focus, persistence, and belief.
Be tenacious. Embrace tenacity. Remember that success is not only about results. It’s the result of your efforts. Effort is supercharged with the right attitude, every time.
You can do it!
